Chaman border with Afghanistan reopens after 10 months of closure

epa11492481 People cross into Afghanistan at Pak-Afghan border in Chaman, Pakistan, 23 July 2024. Protesters in Chaman, Pakistan, have ended their nine-month sit-in at the border crossing with Afghanistan after the government reversed its October 2023 decision to impose stricter visa requirements on small traders. This policy had mandated passports and visas for daily border crossings, significantly affecting cross-border trade and local livelihoods, as residents previously relied on identity cards to engage in commerce. The protests, which began in response to the visa restrictions, resulted in violent clashes with security forces, leading to injuries and fatalities. Traders will now once again be able to cross the Chaman-Spin Boldak border using their government-issued identity cards, Olus Yar Khan, a spokesman for the protestors said. The Chaman border crossing is the second busiest between Pakistan and Afghanistan, facilitating the daily movement of 30,000 to 40,000 people for business. EPA/AKHTER GULFAM
