HD Hyundai Co. has expanded its naval research and development (R&D) organization, formerly under HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., and elevated to its central command center.

The move is aimed at rapidly integrating artificial intelligence and electrification technologies into naval vessels, aligning with the advanced demands of the global naval market.

On Wednesday, HD Hyundai held an inauguration ceremony for the newly established Naval Technology Research Institute at the headquarters of the HD Hyundai Global R&D Center.

This institute is an expanded and reorganized entity from the former Naval Technology Center of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Special Ship Business Division.

The new institute will serve as the cornerstone for HD Hyundai’s three key strategic areas in naval development: naval electrification, unmanned naval vessel development, and enhancing the competitiveness of export naval vessels.

“The paradigm in the special ship market is shifting towards smart naval vessels,” said HD Hyundai Vice Chairman Chung Ki-sun. “We are committed to making the Naval Technology Research Institute the world’s best, thereby contributing to South Korea’s rise as one of the top four defense powerhouses globally.”
