UNID btplus invests in OCSmaterials to expand into EV thermal materials

UNID btplus Co., a South Korean manufacturer of medium-density fiberboards (MDFs), is expected to advance into the electric vehicle (EV) heat rejection materials market, with its acquisition of OCSmaterials Co., an EV thermal interface materials specialist.

UNID btplus announced on Monday that it has acquired 85,714 shares of OCSmaterials for about 6 billion won ($4.3 million), securing 29 percent stake in the company.

OCSmaterials specializes in thermal management products for EVs and electronic devices, including EV thermal barrier pads.

Known for its proprietary technologies, OCSmaterials develops custom products that are vital for preventing EV fires.

UNID btplus’ investment in OCSmaterials underscores the growing importance of thermal management materials.

A company official cited the “growing need” for these materials due to the miniaturization, multi-functionality and high integration of automotive batteries and electronic devices, which increase the risk of explosion and malfunction, as the reason for the decision, adding that the flame-resistant products developed by OCSmaterials are critical to the safety of EVs.

OCSmaterials is committed to localizing thermal management products, aiming to compete with global manufacturers and establish a stable supply chain.

The company plans to develop high-efficiency thermal management materials for EVs and hydrogen vehicles, with future expansions into aviation, ships, drones, and urban air mobility.

As of the first quarter, UNID btplus had cash assets of about 100 billion won and a debt ratio of 16 percent.

“The latest investment will allow UNID btplus to enter the thermal management materials industry, thereby enhancing corporate competitiveness and value through business diversification,” a company official said.
