LG Energy Solution’s AI solution to expedite battery cell design

LG Energy Solution Ltd. (LGES), the pure-play vehicle battery maker under South Korea’s LG Group, developed an artificial intelligence (AI) solution that reduces the time required to design battery cells by 93 percent from two weeks to a day. This innovation is expected to enhance the company’s operational efficiency and reduce its operating costs.

LGES announced on Sunday that it has developed an “Optimal Cell Design AI Recommendation Model.” The model can present a cell design plan, including verification, within a day by inputting the performance conditions specified by the customer, such as capacity, energy density, and resistance.

Previously, cell design personnel needed to create a draft design and repeatedly check whether the expected performance could be achieved, a process that meant finalizing the optimal cell design took around two weeks.

“The biggest advantage of this solution is that cell design can be achieved at a consistent level and speed, regardless of the designer’s skills,” a company official said.

LGES devised this AI based on its 30 years of experience in the business. It trained the AI on approximately 100,000 cell design plans developed in response to various customer requirements. The AI solution is expected to be gradually integrated into the company’s internal cell development system as early as October 2024. It is currently being applied on a trial basis, with plans to extend its application to battery module and pack design moving forward.

“By incorporating AI technology into cell design, which determines battery performance, we aim to deliver overwhelming product competitiveness and differentiated customer value,” LGES Chief Digital Officer Lee Jin-gyu said in a statement.
