Hanwha Ocean Co. announced on Friday that it has received Approval in Principle from the Korean Register (KR) for its smart lighting control system designed for commercial ships.

This approval signifies the technical feasibility of the system, which dynamically adjusts lighting based on different areas of the ship.

The smart system uses motion sensors in internal corridors to activate lights only when a person is present.

In the engine room, the lighting is controlled based on time, reducing brightness to 5 percent of normal levels outside of working hours.

Additionally, public spaces such as dining areas are equipped with brightness control switches, offering more flexibility in lighting preferences.

Hanwha Ocean claims it is the first in the shipbuilding industry to implement such a centralized lighting control program on vessels.

This program, installed in the wheelhouse, allows for comprehensive control of the ship’s lighting, monitoring the status of the lights, and detecting any malfunctions.

An economic analysis of the smart lighting control system, based on a 174,000-cubic-meter liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, revealed significant benefits.

Annual carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by up to 45 percent compared to traditional lighting systems. Fuel and power consumption also decreased by 44 percent and the lifespan of the lighting system increased by 48 percent.

Hanwha Ocean plans to integrate the smart lighting control system with its proprietary smart ship platform, HS4, to provide comprehensive integrated management.
