Protest against government ordnance for drug testing of drivers, in Bucharest

epa11473141 Protesters wave placards during a protest against Government Ordinance OUG 84 outside the government headquarters in Bucharest, Romania, 11 July 2024. Dozens of people, organized by the civic association 'Declic', gathered in Romania's capital with banners and placards to protest against the ordinance regarding police procedures to test drivers against drug consumption, given that this ordinance does not take into account ineffective drug-tester devices used bu the police, nor the restriction of individual freedoms generated by the ambiguities of the appeal procedures of the anti-drug measures and lack of standardization. Due to the Romanian police's outdated drug field testers, which produce false positives in 50 percent of cases, and the Coroner's Institution lengthy process for conducting drug tests and re-tests, drivers, bikers, and cyclists risk facing legal penalties or fines until they can prove their innocence. Rather than simplifying the situation, the new ordinance could result in a suspected driver waiting up to a year to have their license reinstated after a false positive drug test. Protesters demanded the total repeal of the ordinance, although the government approved its correction today. The placard reads: '#I take paracetamol too. Repeal OUG 84!' EPA/ROBERT GHEMENT
