Protest to demand for the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan

epa11472640 Lawyers, supporters of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan's party Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI), protest to demand for the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, in Islamabad, Pakistan, 11 July 2024. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention on 01 July called for the immediate release of former Pakistani Prime Minister and PTI founder Imran Khan, saying that the detention was 'arbitrarily in violation of international laws'. The Geneva-based group added that Pakistani authorities have 'no legal basis' for detaining Khan. The former prime minister and cricket star was convicted for corrupt practices in August 2023 and disqualified from running for office for five years. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found his prosecution lacked legal grounds and was intended to disqualify him from politics. Pakistani authorities have not responded to the UN's findings.
