Archaeologists discover marble statue of Hermes at Heraclea Sintica

epa11458797 Archaeologists work next to the newly discovered ancient statue during excavations in the ancient city of Heraclea Sintika, near Petrich, Bulgaria, 05 July 2024. For the first time during the archaeological excavations in the ancient city of Heraclea Sintika an entire marble sculpture was discovered, which is over two meters and dated from the 2nd century AD. Although there are concerns on how to preserve the ancient structures that were uncovered six years ago in the area where a big sewer is, the head of the archaeological excavations, Prof. Dr. Ludmil Vagalinski, said that the statue 'is well preserved and rises above human height.' It probably depicts Hermes, one of the most popular deities in this area, Vagalinski added. EPA/VASSIL DONEV
