French Socialist Party leader Faure: left coalition priority is to beat far right in the elections

epa11458536 French Socialist Party (Parti socialiste, PS) First Secretary Olivier Faure poses for a photograph after an interview with Spanish news agency EFE in Paris, France, 04 July 2024 (issued 05 July 2024). The Socialist Party's first secretary since 2018 is one of the leaders of the New Popular Front, a coalition of progressive parties born to curb the far-right, bringing together the left-wing protesters of France Insoumise (LF), the Ecologists, the Communists and other small formations. In an uncertain post-election context - polls give victory to Marine Le Pen's right-wing National Rally (RN), but surely without an absolute majority - Faure avoided entering into the formation of a 'grand coalition' that some of his partners have put on the table and called for a mobilization on 07 July 2024, to prevent the Le Penists from governing. 'The speculators, those who anticipate the result of a vote, put us in a not very reasonable situation. The only way to talk about it (a 'grand coalition' with all the parties except the RN) is that, somehow, we can beat the far-right,' he reinforced. France will hold a second round of elections for a new parliament on 07 July 2024, after the far-right National Rally made significant gains in the first vote. EPA/CHRISTOPHE PETIT TESSON
