Pakistani court rejects Imran Khan, wife appeal in marriage violation case

epa11441410 Supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and founder of the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party hold placards outside a court after it upheld the sentence in a case involving Khan in alleged unlawful marriage in Islamabad, Pakistan, 27 June 2024. A court in Islamabad has rejected pleas from Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi seeking the suspension of their sentences in the 'iddat' case. The verdict, delivered by Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Afzal Majoka, followed a directive from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) for the session court to announce a decision on Bushra Bibi's plea within 10 days. The couple had been sentenced to seven years in jail and fined Rs500,000 each in the Nikah case. The case refers to a controversial ruling around the Islamic concept of 'iddat', a three-month period a woman must observe after divorce before she can marry again. Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi were convicted for allegedly violating this practice. EPA/RIZWAN KHAN
