Posco Future M to supply cathode, anode materials to GM’s Cadillac LYRIQ

South Korea‘s Posco Future M announced on Wednesday that it will supply both cathode and anode materials for Cadillac’s luxury electric vehicle, LYRIQ. This marks the first case where Posco Future M is providing both key components to a single EV brand. The LYRIQ is the first model based on GM’s next-generation Ultium EV platform.

Following LYRIQ, all GM electric vehicles built on the Ultium platform are expected to use Posco Future M’s cathode and anode materials.

Posco Future M and GM have maintained a robust partnership in the battery sector. In May 2022, POSCO Future M jointly established Ultium CAM with GM.

Ultium CAM is on track to complete a 30,000-ton annual capacity cathode material production plant in Quebec, Canada, by the end of this year. Additionally, plans are underway to expand cathode material production facilities in North America by 2026, and to establish a new precursor plant for intermediate materials.

The battery pack for the LYRIQ incorporates 12 modules of battery cells made from Posco Future M’s cathode and anode materials. The cathode material used is a high-nickel nickel-cobalt-manganese-aluminum (NCMA) product known for its high energy density. This allows the LYRIQ to achieve a range of up to 465 kilometers on a full charge. Posco Future M successfully commenced mass production of NCMA single crystal cathode material in March last year, a first in South Korea.

For the anode material, Posco Future M uses low-expansion natural graphite, which has an improved structural composition compared to conventional products. This enhancement not only boosts the battery’s fast-charging capability but also improves its stability and lifespan.
