Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Kim Young Joon, chairman of BG Pharmaceutical LLC, an American life sciences company, during his visit to South Korea in May.

The meeting drew significant attention given Pompeo’s status as a close confidant of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Pompeo also met with Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and other business leaders including Samsung Electronics Co. Chairman Jay Y. Lee.

Maeil Business Newspaper has learned that Pompeo joined BG Pharmaceutical as a business advisor in 2023, providing advice on business strategy and external affairs.

Pompeo reportedly accepted the role at BG Pharmaceutical as he concurred with the company’s mission to develop affordable drug candidates for patients struggling with high costs of medication.

Pompeo also reportedly decided to take on the position after directly reviewing research results shared by Anthony Sinskey, a tenured professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); David Fisher, a tenured professor of dermatology at Harvard Medical School; and George Murphy, a tenured professor of pathology at Harvard Medical School.

Fisher is a medical advisor at BG Pharmaceutical while Sinskey and Murphy are scientific advisors.

The meeting between Pompeo and Kim in Seoul was intended to share recent research developments from BG Pharmaceutical’s labs in Boston and Korea. It also focused on discussions on global licensing agreements for new healthcare products and drug candidates.

BG Pharmaceutical has been gaining attention in the U.S. for its new healthcare products.
