LS Electric has been chosen as the main contractor for the construction of South Korea’s largest solar power plant on reclaimed land, signaling a significant push into its renewable energy business.

On Monday, the LS Electric consortium, which includes Top Solar, announced the signing of an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract with GS Dangjin Solar Farm. The project, with an estimated budget of 106.2 billion won ($76.5 million), aims to build a 120-megawatt (MW) solar power plant.

The project, initiated by GS Dangjin Solar Farm, a wholly-owned subsidiary of GS Energy, will be located on a 1 million square meter site in Seokmun-myeon, Dangjin, Chungnam, created by the construction of the Daehoman seawall. Upon completion, it will be the largest solar power plant on reclaimed land in South Korea. The project is slated for completion by December next year.

The LS Electric consortium, in partnership with solar specialist Top Solar, will handle the entire EPC process, including the design, manufacturing, procurement, and construction of the 120 MW solar facilities, a 154-kilovolt (kV) substation, and transmission lines.

GS Dangjin Solar Farm aims to commence commercial operations of the solar plant by December next year. Once operational, the electricity generated over the next 20 years will be sold to the market through a direct power purchase agreement (PPA).

The solar power plant is expected to significantly contribute to carbon reduction, with an estimated annual reduction of 73,000 tons of carbon emissions. According to LS Electric, this reduction is equivalent to planting 240,000 pine trees each year.
