HD Hyundai Group‘s Ocean Wise
HD Hyundai Group‘s Ocean Wise, an AI-powered, big data-based maritime navigation solution, is expanding its customer base amid tightening global environmental regulations.

According to HD Hyundai and the shipping industry on Thursday, HD Hyundai Marine Solution Co. has provided Ocean Wise to 12 companies, including POSCO, Hyundai Glovis Co., Korea Midland Power Co., and other mid-sized container shipping companies.

The number of vessels using the solution has reached 181, accounting for 36 percent of HD Hyundai Marine Solution’s annual target of 500 vessels.

Ocean Wise, an AI- and big data-based decarbonization navigation solution, is a key service of the software-defined vehicle (SDV) platform for ships, a new venture by HD Hyundai Marine Solution.

This location-based service uses AI algorithms to measure and predict a ship’s carbon emissions, providing the most efficient navigation routes to reduce emissions.

The solution is gaining attention as global environmental regulations impact the shipping market.

The Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), for example, introduced last year by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), measures the carbon dioxide emissions of ships over 5,000 tons based on fuel consumption and distance traveled, and assigns grades from A to E.

Ships that receive an E grade or three consecutive D grades face operational restrictions.

Ocean Wise offers predictive CII grading services, allowing ship owners to assess their ships’ compliance with these regulations. It also attracts shipping companies needing to manage carbon emissions within their supply chains (Scope 3), as it is a software solution requiring no additional hardware.

Since 2019, HD Hyundai Marine Solution has provided optimal navigation routes and equipment status analyses through its smart ship solution, Integrated Smartship Solution (ISS), and integrated ship equipment management solution, Hyundai Intelligent Engine Monitoring System (HiEMS).

These services required installing sensors, data collection, communication devices, and storage servers on ships, posing cost challenges.

The cloud-based Ocean Wise solution, on the other hand, improves accuracy by integrating basic operational data from ships with AI modeling based on extensive big data from similar ships.

With consent to access operational data from shipping companies and shipowners, the decarbonization solution is available entirely through software.

“Ocean Wise enables carbon emissions management solely through software, allowing both shipping companies and shippers to adopt it without significant costs, thereby broadening the potential customer base,” the company said.

HD Hyundai Marine Solution aims to supply Ocean Wise to 10,000 ships by 2027.

According to Transparency Market Research, the global maritime digital transformation market is projected to grow to $367.7 billion in 2031 from $167.7 billion in 2022.
