LS Cable & System Ltd. will supply submarine cables for the world’s first artificial energy island which is being built for offshore wind power.

LS Cable & System signed a contract with Belgian power company Elia Group SA, the company said Thursday, with the deal worth about 280 billion won ($201 million). Under the agreement, LS Cable & System will supply submarine cables to Princess Elisabeth Island, located about 45 kilometers off the coast of Belgium, where Elia is building a floating structure to connect a 3.5-gigawatt offshore wind farm for power storage, distribution, and management.

Princess Elisabeth Island will serve as a hub for regulating energy supply between Belgium, mainland Europe, the United Kingdom and Denmark when it is completed in 2030. The island will include substations, energy storage and grid connection facilities, with submarine cables transmitting power between the artificial island and the mainland. LS Cable & System will supply materials, including 225-kilovolt submarine cables and accessories for the offshore wind power project, and will perform electrical connection work and on-site testing.

LS Cable & System is ramping up its global submarine cable business, with efforts including recent investments in a manufacturing facility in the United States, facilities for LS Marine Solution Co. and business expansion in Europe and Asia via LS Eco Energy Ltd.
