'Equality for all': LGBTQIA+ community in Thailand calls for more rights

epa11424786 Danuphorn Punnakanta, (L) a ruling Pheu Thai Party's MP and chairman of the lower house's committee on marriage equality bill, speaks near opposition Move Forward Party's LGBTQIA+ MP Tunyawaj Kamolwongwat (R) during a legislation of the marriage equality bill at Parliament in Bangkok, Thailand, 27 March 2024 (issued 20 June 2024). 'This is the start of equality for all Thai people. We made this (law) to reduce the disparity in society. It might not solve all the problems, but it is a first step towards equality,' Danuphorn told fellow lawmakers before the vote in parliament earlier in March 2024. Thailand has just passed, on 18 June, a historic marriage equality bill that will grant same-sex couples advantages that are currently only enjoyed by heterosexual married couples, such as tax benefits, as well the right to inherit and manage their spouse's assets; or to give spousal consent for medical treatment and to adopt children. But activists and rights groups say that more action is needed if Thailand is to justify its reputation as a relatively safe and welcoming place for LGBTQIA+ people.
