The North Face, the outdoor brand of South Korea’s Youngone Outdoor Corp., said on Friday that it launched a limited edition of the ‘North Face Hangul T-shirt,’ which features old Hangul typography based on the characters of Hunminjeongeum, a 15th-century manuscript that introduced the Korean alphabet Hangul.

The T-shirts were introduced to foster greater interest and affection for the Korean language and incorporate old Hangul typography that is no longer in use, with characters representing ‘person,’ ‘mountain,’ ‘chicken,’ ‘prince,’ ‘island,’ and ‘wide.’

This typography was developed by Hyungwon Kang, a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist who is currently active in promoting Korea‘s cultural heritage around the world.

Youngone Outdoor plans to release additional “Hangul T-shirts” featuring other old Hangul typography in July 2024.
