Turkey eyes plan to euthanize strays amid growing dog population

epa11405685 Animal rights activists shout slogans during a pro-stray animals rally in Istanbul, Turkey, 02 June 2024 (issued 12 June 2024). Four million dogs without owners roam the streets of Turkey, according to estimates by the Turkish government, which has announced a project to reduce their number, dividing public opinion between those who see a growing threat and those who believe stray dogs just need a loving owner. The proposed law, which the Turkish Parliament hopes to debate soon, plans to transfer stray dogs to kennels, where they can be adopted within a period of 30 days. However, those left without an owner after one month would be euthanized to free up space, as 250 animal shelters scattered across Turkey have an overall capacity of a maximum of 90,000 animals.
