South Korea’s LS Cable & System has started mass production of a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable with the world’s highest voltage 525-kilovolt (kV). The announcement was made on Monday after the company recently began producing the cable at its site in Donghae, Gangwon Province.

The 525kV HVDC cable is currently the highest voltage direct current cable available globally, and only a handful of companies worldwide can produce it. The newly mass-produced cables will be used in the Netherlands’ state-owned electric utility company TenneT’s 2-gigawatt (GW) transmission network projects, specifically the ‘BalWin4’ and ‘LanWin1’ projects. These projects aim to lay HVDC cables to connect offshore wind farms in the North Sea with inland regions in Germany and the Netherlands.

LS Cable & System anticipates strong market growth, especially considering the European Union’s recent increase in its offshore wind supply target from 60GW by 2030 to 300GW by 2050.
