Ukrainian man shelters dozens of goats abandoned during Russian invasion

epa11402789 Local man Viktor, 67, walks with his goats in Orikhiv, near the frontline in the Zaporizhzhia region, southeastern Ukraine, 10 June 2024, amid the Russian invasion. Viktor's home, a private house, has become a sanctuary for around fifty goats. His herd of six increased significantly after neighbors fleeing Russia's full-scale invasion left their goats in his care. Despite the dangers, Viktor's commitment to his animals led him to refuse evacuation. His wife found safety in Poland and his children live elsewhere in Ukraine. According to local police, there are no buildings left standing in Orikhiv town. Less than a thousand people, mostly elderly, still live there as opposed to the 15,000 inhabitants before the Russian invasion. There is currently no water or gas, electricity is scarcely available and locals spend most of their day seeking shelter in basements to protect themselves from daily shelling. Russian troops entered Ukraine on 24 February 2022 starting a conflict that has provoked destruction and a humanitarian crisis. EPA/KATERYNA KLOCHKO
