Maeil Business Newspaper visited Hyundai Transys Inc.‘s Dongtan Seat Research and Development (R&D) Center during the previous week, as the facility was evaluating the seat performance for Hyundai Motor Co.’s upcoming Ioniq 9 (project name ME), which is scheduled for release in 2024.

Hyundai Transys is an auto parts unit of South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Group.

Tests were conducted to ensure that the seat‘s heating and ventilation functions operate correctly in extreme conditions ranging from minus 40 degrees Celius to 80 degrees Celsius. The tension was palpable in the SLED test lab, which simulates rear-end collisions at 80 kilometers per hour, as the pressure was filled in the propulsion cylinder. A dummy strapped with a seatbelt accelerated to 41 km/h over a distance of about 10 meters before coming to an abrupt stop. Despite the impact, both the seat and the dummy remained firmly in place.

Hyundai Transys opened the Seat R&D Center in 2007 in Dongtan, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, covering a total floor area of 27,031 square meters. The center is equipped with advanced facilities to handle the entire development process, from seat components to finished products.

The center also focuses on advanced technology research for purpose-built vehicles (PBVs) and is developing ideas to efficiently design the interior space for urban air mobility (UAM) vehicles.
