U.S. Proxense files patent lawsuit against LG Electronics

Proxense LLC, a U.S. biometrics solutions provider, has filed a patent lawsuit against LG Electronics Inc., raising concerns over patent risk among South Korean companies.

According to multiple industry sources on Sunday, Proxense, a non-practicing entity (NPE), has filed a complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas against LG Electronics for alleged infringement of six patents related to biometric authentication and other crucial technologies in mobile payment solutions.

Proxense claims that the technologies were used in LG Pay without proper authorization.

The latest lawsuit was not the first action Proxense took against a Korean company.

In 2021, the company sued the Korean headquarters and the U.S. subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, alleging that its patents were infringed by Samsung Pay solutions.

The defendant filed a patent invalidation trial in the U.S. but the court ruled in favor of Proxense. The two companies reached a settlement in the end.
