South Korea’s short-selling accessibility is “deteriorating,” Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) Inc. said in a report released on Thursday.

The practice has gone from “+” to “-,” according to the agency’s annual market accessibility review, a suggestion that it requires improvement.

The report is the first of MSCI’s official responses to Korea’s ban on short selling that went into effect last November.

Korean financial regulators have stepped up their efforts to attract foreign investors im recent years, and are pushing for the country’s inclusion in the MSCI developed market index.

MSCI will release its annual country market classification review on June 20th, 2024.
