Two solo exhibitions by Seoul-based artists reflect on the complexities of contemporary urban life.

“Suh Yongsun: New Works,” on view through June 23rd, 2024, at One and J. Gallery in Seoul, features more than 20 works depicting cityscapes and portraits of “strangers” he encountered in cities including Seoul, New York, Beijing, and Paris between 2007 and 2024.

Gunhee Kim‘s solo exhibition, on view through June 22nd, 2024, at Lee Eugean Gallery in Seoul, features ten or so new works, each based on a single photograph. The artist took a photograph of hundreds of chairs that were stacked in the city center after a demonstration ended one night in 2023 and was inspired to deconstruct the image as well as recreate fragments of the cityscape.
