Water distribution effort at the former Kakhovka reservoir a year after dam explosion

epa11392532 Local people receive water, which is distributed by the authorities at the village of Malokaterinivka, on the shore of the former Kakhovka reservoir, in Zaporizhzhia region, Ukraine, 05 June 2024 (issued 06 June 2024) amid the ongoing Russian invasion. Russian forces allegedly destroyed a critical dam and hydroelectric power plant on the Dnipro River in the Kherson region near the front line in southern Ukraine on 06 June 2023, leading to the flooding of several settlements and loss of life. Later one year after the dam explosion the bottom of the former Kakhovka reservoir is covered with various grassy plants with thickets of willow and poplar more than three meters high. According to the calculations of the State Environmental Inspection, the extent of damages is 77.8 billion hryvnias (~1.75 billion euros). There was approximately 20 cubic km of water in the Kakhov reservoir at the time of the explosion. EPA/KATERYNA KLOCHKO
