Tradional dugout canoe crafting in Massachusetts

epa11390287 Troy Running Wolf Phillips of Nipmuc Nation, (L) looks over a mishoon, as he performs a Mishoon Burn, the process of constructing a wooden canoe, called a mishoon, on the shore of Lake Quinsigamond, in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, USA, 04 June 2024. The Nipmuc people, a local Native Indian tribe, crafted the dugout canoes and used them over lakes and large ponds and due to the weight, would conceal them in winter by intentionally submerging them with large rocks below the surface of the water. In 2001, a mishoon was discovered preserved in Lake Quinisigamond, and then two more mishoonash (plural for mishoon) were subsequently found; all three carbon dated back to the late 1600's.
