HD Hyundai has unveiled its plans for futuristic ships at the shipbuilding and marine expo Posidonia 2024.

HD Hyundai affiliates, including HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, are participating in the world's largest marine expo scheduled from Monday to Friday in Athens, Greece, according to the holding company Tuesday.

On the first day of the expo, HD Hyundai signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR) to develop a new futuristic ship structure, which can eliminate blind spots using AI technology.

These ships will deploy cameras to capture blind spots and use AI to reconstruct and visualize these areas.

During the expo, HD Hyundai showcased its eco-conscious ships, including methanol-powered crude carriers, container ships and LNG carriers, and its HiMSEN dual fuel engine in its booth.

Vice Chairman Chung Ki-sun also discussed measures on technological cooperation with global shipping companies and the future of the shipbuilding industry.

HD Hyundai will also receive approvals in principle (AIP) for its developed eco-friendly ship technologies, including certificates from Lloyd’s Register (LR) and the ABS for its ammonia-powered vessels. Ammonia is a hydrogen based zero-carbon fuel that can be produced with no greenhouse gas emissions using renewable electricity.

“HD Hyundai will proactively respond to technological changes and lead the maritime industry by developing futuristic ships that include eco-friendly and digital technologies,” HD Hyundai’s Vice Chairman Chung Ki-sun said.
