ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula presser after general elections in South Africa

epa11385172 Secretary General of the African National Congress, Fikile Mbalula addresses the media at the IEC center in Johannesburg, South Africa, 02 June 2024. This is the first statement and media briefing that the ANC have given after the un-official results have shown that the party has lost their majority and will need to form a coalition with opposition parties to stay in power. Over 27 million citizens were registered to vote in the national and provincial elections to elect a new National Assembly and state legislatures, according to the electoral commission of South Africa. South Africans do not directly vote for the president. They vote for parties that will appoint 400 representatives to the National Assembly who will then choose the president for the next five years with a simple majority of 201 votes or more. Some of the main concerns of South Africans are unemployment, unreliable electricity supply, corruption, economic issues including inflation and poverty according to an Afrobarometer pre-election survey. Those issues could mean the end of the political dominance of the African National Congress (ANC), three decades after Nelson Mandela led the party to power. EPA/KIM LUDBROOK
