Police cracks down illegal foreign businesses using Thai nominees

epa11381217 A Russian man has his documents checked as he arrives for the inquiry accused of operating illicit business nominations at the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) in Bangkok, Thailand, 31 May 2024. Thai police cracked down on illegal business in Phuket and arrested 135 suspects of whom 98 are foreigners including 67 Russians, four Chineses, three Ukrainians, three Indians along with 21 other nationals and 37 Thais who are alleged to be running illegal foreign business by illicitly nominating Thais as shareholders. Businesses essentially running on foreign funding and operators are seen to have an adverse impact on Thai society and local businesses. Under Thai law, a business that involves Thai individuals holding 51 percent of shares and 49 percent held by foreigners is allowed to operate without the need for special permits.
