LG Innotek uses AI to reduce camera module defects by 90%

LG Innotek Co. has successfully managed to reduce the defect rate of high-spec camera modules using artificial intelligence technology, the company announced on Thursday.

Since it began developing an AI-powered processing tool to predict process defects in 2021, LG Innotek has created its own AI process tool by training it on vast amount of data points related to the camera module process.

Since its application in the field last year, the AI tool has been able to detect defects through performance inspections at the initial stage of mass production and find a new processing solution within six hours, significantly cutting the time from over 72 hours previously. The new AI tool has also decreased defect rates in some of the high-defect areas by up to 90 percent.

The company expects that the ramp-up period for components requiring complex processes will be shortened. Cost competitiveness has also improved as the cost incurred to correct defects after mass production has decreased.
