Samsung Electronics Co. will launch its artificial intelligence (AI) PC, the Galaxy Book4 Edge, in South Korea in June 2024 to join the competition for AI PCs, or those equipped with high-performance semiconductors and capable of processing AI.

Samsung Electronics held a media day event on Thursday in Yongsan District, central Seoul, where it unveiled the Galaxy Book4 Edge. The device was introduced as one of the first Copilot+PCs at an event hosted by Microsoft Corp. at its headquarters in Seattle, the United States, on May 20th, 2024.

The Copilot+ PC features a neural processing unit (NPU) embedded in Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite semiconductor, offering AI processing speeds of up to 45 trillion operations per second (TOPS).

The Galaxy Book4 Edge, which will be launched on June 18th, is a premium product equipped with a high-performance central processing unit (CPU). A 35.6cm (14 inch) version will be sold for 2.15 million won ($1,563), while a 40.6cm version for 2.35 million won and 2.65 million won depending on the model.

Samsung Electronics noted that the Galaxy Book4 Edge has a hybrid AI feature that supports both on-device AI and cloud AI, and can be used in conjunction with a Galaxy smartphone. When connected to the smartphone and the Galaxy Book4 Edge via Link to Windows, users can use the Galaxy AI feature, which can be used on the smartphone and a PC screen.

When the Circle to Search results from a Galaxy smartphone are mirrored on the Galaxy Book4 Edge display, for example, users can directly paste the search results into a document they are working on.

After recording content from a meeting content on a Galaxy smartphone, users can connect it to the Galaxy Book4 Edge and use the Galaxy AI features on the PC screen to summarize or translate the content. Smooth integration via an email attachment is also possible.

The Recall feature, introduced with the Galaxy Book4 Edge, the first Copilot+ PC in the country, allows users to easily search for tasks they performed at a specific time in the past using natural language.

This feature can easily search for recently created documents or emails, as well as video content viewed in the past, using text or voice.

Microsoft’s various functions, which assist with work efficiency and creativity, are also showcased. Co-creator in Paint can transform simple sketches into artwork or generate new images with just a few lines of commands using AI.

The Effects feature in Windows Studio enhances video conferencing with fun filters and background effects powered by on-device AI, offering practical functions such as voice focus, portrait mode, background blur, and focus adjustment.

“We aim to be the leader in the Korean AI PC market with the launch of the Galaxy Book4 Edge, which provides enhanced Galaxy AI features,” Samsung Electronics product lead Park Jun-ho said. “We will innovate AI usability in 2024 so that two out of three AI laptops sold in the Korean market will be Galaxy books.”

In the United States, AI PCs unveiled by Microsoft are expected to compete with Apple Inc.’s Mac-based AI PCs. Apple is anticipated to unveil various AI features for use in AI PCs at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2024.

Gartner, in the meantime, released a report on Thursday predicting that AI PC shipments will account for 22 percent of total PC shipments for 2024 and account forb100 percent of enterprise PC purchases by the end of 2026.
