Enjila Ender, an Afghan woman empowering fellow women through the art of wood carving

Enjila Ender, a high school graduate from Afghanistan, has been practicing the art of wood carving for over a year, a skill she learned with the encouragement of her brother. Together, they established an art workshop where they currently teach eight female students. Enjila also runs a shop in the Kabul market where she sells goods and participates in local exhibitions. Her main clientele are female school students who, due to the lack of educational opportunities, wish to learn and benefit from the art of carving. The female students, who also work in the shop, are calling for government support and opportunities to sell their products. The rise of handicraft work among women and girls in Kabul in recent years has led to the activation of dozens of workshops in the city, Enjila Ender said. United Nations agencies have said that the restrictions imposed by the Taliban on women and girls will increase the number of child marriages among Afghan girls by 25 per cent, UN Women, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) have released a joint two-page brief.
