Bulgaria's King Ferdinand I's mortal remains transported from Germany to Bulgaria

epa11377655 Princess Kalina's spouse Kitin Munoz (L), Princess Kalina (2-L) of Bulgaria, Princess Kalina's son Simeon Hassan Munoz (3-L) of Bulgaria and Prince Konstantin-Asen (3-R) attend the funeral ceremony to receive the mortal remains of King Ferdinand I at the Vrana Palace in Sofia, Bulgaria, 29 May 2024. Ferdinand I was Prince of Bulgaria from 07 July 1887 to 22 September 1908, when the independence of Bulgaria was declared from the Ottoman Empire, and King of Bulgaria from 22 September 1908, until his abdication on 03 October 1918. After not being allowed by his cousin, the Austrian Emperor Charles I, to remain in his estates in western Hungary (today Burgenland, Austria), the former King Ferdinand went to the city of Coburg, Germany, where he lived from 07 October 1918 until his death. The old tsar was never allowed to visit Bulgaria again, despite his repeated insistences, especially in 1937, at the birth of his grandson, Crown Prince Simeon Turnovski. He died at an advanced age in his home in the center of Coburg on 10 September 1948, having survived the deaths of his two sons and the end of the dynasty in Bulgaria. EPA/VASSIL DONEV
