The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has been selected as the lead institution for the country’s open quantum process infrastructure project, the institute announced on Monday.

The project, promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT from this year to 2031, will establish a quantum fab equipped with essential quantum processing equipment, with funding of 23.4 billion won ($17.2 million) from the central government and 20 billion won from local governments.

KAIST will be responsible for the construction of the quantum fab and infrastructure facilities, while the National Nanofab Center (NNFC) and the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) will join as co-institutions.

SK telecom Co. and Daejeon Technopark will participate as commissioned institutions.

KAIST and NNFC, based on their extensive experience in operating large-scale fabs, will jointly manage the quantum fab to ensure the expertise and commercial viability of the processes. KRISS, a leading institution in quantum technology, will collaborate in the development of core process technologies for various platforms.
