Hylium Industries, POSCO collaborate on lightweight hydrogen fuel tank

South Korean liquid hydrogen specialist Hylium Industries Inc. has teamed up with the country’s top steelmaker POSCO to develop stronger and lighter hydrogen fuel tanks.

Hylium Industries said Friday it has signed a memorandum of understanding with POSCO to develop liquid hydrogen storage tanks using high-strength 316LH stainless steel and lightweight titanium, as well as liquid hydrogen fuel tanks for drones.

Hylium Industries is recognized as a specialist hydrogen facility company with capabilities in installing hydrogen fueling stations, manufacturing liquid hydrogen storage and transportation tanks, and manufacturing trailers for transportation.

The company is known for its world-class technology in manufacturing ultra-lightweight titanium tanks for hydrogen fuel.

It has also recently developed and successfully validated a liquid hydrogen fuel drone capable of flying for 6 hours and 40 minutes for the first time in Korea.

Hylium Industries and POSCO plan to continue cooperation in the design and manufacture of liquid hydrogen storage and transportation tanks using special stainless steel.

They also plan to jointly develop ultra-light titanium liquid hydrogen fuel tanks to improve energy efficiency, which will be applied to Hylium Industries‘ drone products.
