Korean researchers develop piezoelectric element-based technology

A South Korean research team, led by Professor Chang Jin-ho of electrical engineering and computer science at the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST), has developed a piezoelectric components-based technology that can wirelessly charge batteries of implantable medical devices using ultrasound.

According to the institute on Thursday, it is the world’s first technology to charge a 30mAh battery within 1 hour and 20 minutes through wireless charging.

The technology is expected to contribute to the commercialization of multifunctional implantable medical electronic devices.

The research results showed a minimum of 6.6 times higher power generation efficiency per unit area compared to previously published ultrasound-based wireless power transmission technologies.

The experimental result of charging a 30mAh commercial battery at a distance of 50 millimeters between the transmitter and receiver has not been reported before.
