Black market gasoline business in street corners in Monrovia

epa11297927 Black market gasoline being sold on a roadside in Johnsonville community, outside Monrovia, Liberia, 24 April 2024. Many young people, facing unemployment, engage in the resale of gasoline on the black market as an alternative source of income for themselves and their families. The gasoline is bought from the state-owned Liberia Petroleum Refining Company, which has exclusive control over the country?s petroleum industry, and resold at almost every street corners and roadsides in Monrovia as well as other parts of the country despite public concerns of danger to safety and security. Those illegal resellers earn their money when they repackage the gasoline and reduce the amount of gasoline contained in a one gallon bottle. Buyers are paying the same price of $4.47 per gallon from a regular filling station and are aware they get less quantity of gasoline. They accept the deal as a way to avoid queuing for hours or more at official gas stations, which are scarce. EPA/AHMED JALLANZO ATTENTION: This Image is part of a PHOTO SET
