South Korea‘s antitrust watchdog took a proactive step in response to the emergence of global artificial intelligence services, as concerns about potential monopolies and unfair practices grow.

According to sources close to the government on Wednesday, the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) commissioned a research analysis into the AI market. The move aligns with growing concerns about monopolistic practices and market opacity in the AI sector, given its substantial impact on various industries and daily life, with even greater potential influence moving forward.

With this research, the authority aims to examine whether there are barriers within the AI industry that impede new entrants or hinder competition to ensure fair market dynamics as AI technologies continue to grow rapidly.
