Agricultural activity in southern Lebanon affected by exchange of hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel

The head of the Farmers Union in southern Lebanon Mohammad al Houssainy said in an interview with Spanish Agencia EFE that agricultural activity has been stopped since October in a border strip of about 1,000 km2, where olive plantations and small farms attached to them were affected by exchange of hostilities at the border area between Hezbollah and Israel. Southern Lebanon is home to around half of the almost 60,000 hectares of olive groves spread across the country, many of which remain abandoned due to the conflict or have been reduced to ashes. In southern Lebanon, which has become a confrontation front between the Shiite group Hezbollah and Israel, most of the population depends totally or partially on agriculture, but the security situation has long prevented them from going out to the fields and the return of the more than 90,000 displaced people.
