South Korean electric vehicle (EV) charger maker SK signet Inc. announced on Tuesday that it built a cybersecurity enhancement system for EV chargers in collaboration with Fescaro Co., a company specializing in automotive software and security systems.

SK signet conducted a thorough examination of the cybersecurity status of EV chargers in collaboration with Fescaro, performing threat analysis and evaluations and forming countermeasures based on the prioritization of threats. The company also devised an overall security roadmap to flexibly respond to cyber threats in the mid to long term.

The importance of charger cybersecurity is growing with the spread of electric vehicles increases, as chargers not only communicate with vehicles to exchange information but are also equipped with various software components such as payment systems and membership services.

Fescaro, co-founded by developers of automotive systems and white hat hackers, provides optimized automotive cybersecurity solutions in compliance with international regulations and standards, SK signet explained. Fescaro‘s solutions are the first in Korea to receive FIPS 140-2 certification from the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

SK signet also plans to establish a charger integrated support system (CISS) with features such as real-time monitoring and control of chargers, as well as wireless over-the-air software updates (OTA), to improve customer convenience and enhance security.

“We will build the CISS in the near future based on the enhanced EV charger cybersecurity system, which will protect the assets and information of charger users to provide safe charging services,” a senior R&D official at SK signet said.
