South Korean private security company S-1 Corp reported a 38 percent year-on-year increase in sales volumes of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) on Monday.

This surge in AED sales follows a recent amendment that mandates more public places, including tourist information offices in tourist attractions, to install these life-saving devices. The amendment, which went into effect on February 17th, 2023, also requires workplaces with 300 regular employees or more to have public access AEDs installed. Non-compliance with this regulation could mean fines of up to 1 million won for the concerned establishments.

Conventional AEDs take an average of 20 seconds to analyze the heart rhythm in people who are experiencing cardiac arrest and deliver a high-voltage shock to the heart.

But S-1 reduced this time to around 10 seconds by using a technology that combines analysis and voltage delivery.

The company has also adopted a remote monitoring approach to device maintenance. This approach enables administrators to monitor the real-time availability and current locations of AEDs and accessories via a website and mobile app.
