Naver Pay is launching its Facesign Payment service, at Kyung Hee University’s Seoul campus in central Seoul, South Korean tech giant Naver Corp.’s mobile payment service said on Monday.

Kyung Hee University is the first place where the service, which is based on artificial intelligence (AI) facial recognition technology, will be commercialized.

Facesign allows users to register their facial information using their smartphones and make payments using facial recognition, without the need for a card or smartphone. The service was previously validated at Naver‘s 1784 headquarters, where Naver employees used it to enter the company premises and log into its systems on top of making payments.

Users who register their faces with Naver Pay can use the service at payment kiosks equipped with Facesign-specific devices at restaurants and cafes on the Kyung Hee University campus.

Users only need to register their facial information once on the Naver Pay application (app), with payments made using the user’s Naver Pay money and points.

Facesign was introduced as a future payment trend based on AI technology at the Korea Fintech Week 2023 organized by the Financial Services Commission in August of the year. It gained the event attendees’ attention for its ability to block attempts to make payments using photos or videos.
