Jonas Deichmann: extreme athlete sets sights on next world record

German extreme athlete Jonas Deichmann is in Girona, Spain to train for his latest attempt at a world record: completing 120 long-distance Ironman triathlons - which consist of a 3.9km swim, a 180.2km bicycle ride and a 42.2km run - in 120 days. Deichmann is doing the challenge in Roth, southern Germany, from 09 May to 05 September.

The challenge will be the toughest he has set himself so far. He has already cycled the landmass of Eurasia in 64 days, completing 14,331 kilometers in 2017. A year later, he got back on his bike again to cycle 23,000 kilometers from the Arctic Ocean in Alaska to the southern tip of Argentina. Then in 2019, he rode 18,000 kilometers from Cape to Cape (Cape North, Norway to Cape Town, South Africa). The next year, he did a triathlon around the world, which means completing a distance of 120 Ironman in 430 days. In 2023, he cycled 5,500 kilometers across the US, from New York to Los Angeles, and one day after arriving he ran the whole way back, finishing with the New York Marathon. His exploits have earned him the nickname of the "German Forrest Gump."

Apart from the sports performance itself, Jonas will have to overcome other challenges while completing the 120 triathlons over the summer: avoiding injury or illness, eating enough and sleeping well."?But the body will adapt and I will be fine," he tells EPA.
