[WT논평] Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar is pondering four options

Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who masterminded the Oct. 7 invasion of Israel, is believed to be lurking in the subterranean labyrinth beneath the Gaza Strip.

I’d wager that Mr. Sinwar is pondering four options.

Option 1: He can wait, betting that President Biden will pressure the Israelis to accept a “cease-fire,” a deal that would allow him to rise, praise Allah for victory, resume ruling Gaza, and prepare for the next round of atrocities.

Option 2: The Israelis let Mr. Sinwar go into exile, say in Algeria, in return for his release of hostages. He may be giving serious thought to that way out.

Option 3: “Martyrdom in the way of Allah.” To jihadis everywhere, Mr. Sinwar would be a hero and an inspiration.

Mr. Sinwar is not fighting for a Palestinian state. He is fighting

for the extermination of the Jewish state and its replacement ― “from the river to the sea” ― by an Islamic emirate, a jewel in the crown of the mightier-than-ever caliphate that is to come.

For Mr. Sinwar, a “two-state solution” would solve nothing unless it provided an improved platform from which to launch Oct. 7-style attacks. Hamas has amassed an enormous arsenal, which is why, four months after Oct. 7, Mr. Sinwar’s fighters are still firing missiles and shooting Israelis.

Mr. Sinwar has fourth option. He could emerge from the depths, surviving hostages in tow, and order his troops to cease firing.

That would save the lives of many in Gaza, both his comrades in arms and those serving as Hamas pawns. But that option, I’d wager, is the one Mr. Sinwar is least likely to choose.

10월7일 이스라엘 침공을 지휘한 하마스 지도자 야히아 신와르는 가자지구 지하의 미로 속에 숨어 있는 것으로 믿어진다.
 
신와르는 4가지 선택을 숙고하는 것이 틀림없다고 필자는 생각한다.
 
선택 1: 그는 조 바이든 미국 대통령이 이스라엘에 압력을 가해 “휴전”을 받아들이도록 할 것이 틀림없다고 믿으며 기다릴 수 있다. 그 거래는 그가 다시 일어나 승리했다며 알라를 찬양하고 가자를 다시 지배하며 다음번의 잔혹 행위를 준비하는 것을 허용할 것이다.
 
선택 2: 이스라엘이 인질 석방을 대가로, 예를 들어 알제리에 신와르가 망명하게 한다. 그는 그런 탈출을 진지하게 생각하고 있을지도 모른다.
 
선택 3:“알라의 방식에 따른 순교.” 신와르는 모든 곳의 성전주의자들에게 영웅이 되어 영감을 줄 것이다.
 
신와르는 팔레스타인 국가를 위해 싸우고 있는 것이 아니다. 그는 유대국가를 멸망시키고 “강에서 바다까지” 이슬람 토후국으로 바꾸기 위해 싸우고 있다. 그 토후국은 장차 오게 되는 한층 강력한 칼리프 왕국의 왕관에 박힌 보석이다.
 
신와르에게는 “두 국가 해법”이 10월7일 방식의 공격을 개시하는 향상된 발판을 제공하지 않는 한 아무것도 해결하지 않는다.
 
하마스는 엄청난 분량의 무기를 비축해 놓았는데 10월7일 이후 4개월 동안 신와르의 전투원들이 여전히 미사일을 발사하고 이스라엘 사람들에게 총을 쏘는 까닭이 거기에 있다.
 
신와르는 네 번째 선택 방안을 갖고 있다. 그는 살아 있는 인질들을 데리고 깊은 지하에서 나오고 자기 부대에 전투를 멈추라고 명령할 수 있다.
 
그것은 무장한 그의 동료들과 하마스의 포로 노릇을 하는 사람들 양쪽을 포함하여 가자에서 많은 사람의 생명을 구할 수 있다. 그러나 필자가 장담하건대 그 선택은 신와르가 선택할 가능성이 가장 낮다.
