Mass protests in Sana'a against the US terrorist designation of the Houthis

Thousands of Houthi supporters demonstrated in Sana'a to protest against the US designation of Yemen?s Houthis as a 'Specially Designated Global Terrorist group' that came into effect on 16 February, due to their increased attacks on shipping lanes in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The Houthis have kept up drone and missile attacks on commercial ships, with the aim of ending the Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip, and in response to US-led retaliatory strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen. In December 2023, the US Department of Defense announced a multinational operation to safeguard trade and protect ships in the Red Sea in response to the escalation of Houthi attacks.
