epaselect epa11132294 Lamplighter Aran Osman inspects one of the remaining gas lamps in Westminster in London, Britain, 06 February 2024. There are five lamplighters employed by British Gas responsible for maintaining 1300 gas powered lanterns that were first installed from 1813. Clockwork mechanisms need rewinding every 14 days and parts replaced. Central London had the world?s first gas lighting and many remain today with tourists coming from Asia and America to see them. Westminster Council has proposed replacing lamps not listed with Historic England with LED lights instead causing a backlash with gas lantern enthusiasts.
