epa11131371 Romanian volunteer Bianca Joita, 19, speaks, as former teenager, about her online trauma experience during the conference called 'The Internet in the Family', organized to mark the World Safe Internet Day, in Bucharest, Romania, 06 February 2024. 'Save the Children' NGO made public the results of the sociological research 'Internet in the Family'. The study, based on an opinion poll carried out in January 2024, on a sample of 1866 parents from Romania who have children under 18 years old, shows that the online viewing of video content has an incidence of 80 percent for children under the age of 5, and approximately 50 percent in the case of teenagers; 34 percent of 16-17 year olds spend 4-6 hours online and 14 percent of them spend more than 6 hours online every day. Also, the study shows that 96 percent of children access the Internet using a smart phone, and one out of two children has been a victim of various forms of harassment in the online environment; the age at which the children start accessing social networks falls between 5-10 years. The conference was attended by members of the government, representatives of the police, parents, teachers and volunteers. World Safer Internet Day is marked now in 200 countries worldwide, to raise awareness among children, teachers, parents and carers of how to use the internet and mobiles in a safe and responsible way.
