Yemen's Houthis have been mobilizing and recruiting thousands of tribal militiamen as part of the creation of an army as the Shiite group prepares for a possible confrontation with the United States and Israel amid fears of a wider regional conflict stemming from the Houthi escalation of attacks on shipping lanes in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The US and British forces have struck Houthi positions 01 February 2024 in Yemen just hours after the Houthis launched several naval missiles against a US destroyer and another commercial ship, in response to the US-British strikes against their positions, according to a statement by Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea. The US Department of State on 17 January 2024 announced the designation of Yemen's Houthis as a 'Specially Designated Global Terrorist group' amid an escalation of their attacks on shipping lanes in the Red Sea, the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and the Gulf of Aden since November 2023. The US Department of Defense announced in December 2023 a multinational operation to safeguard trade and protect ships in the Red Sea amid the escalation in Houthi attacks. EPA/YAHYA ARHAB
