Yemen's Houthis have been mobilizing and recruiting thousands of tribal militiamen as part of the creation of an army as the Shiite group prepares for a possible confrontation with the United States and Israel amid fears of a wider regional conflict stemming from the Israel-Hamas conflict and the Houthi escalation of attacks on shipping lanes in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Yemen's Houthis have attacked a US military vessel while sailing in the Gulf of Aden, as tensions continue to escalate with the US, according to a statement by Houthis' military spokesman Yahya Sarea. The US Department of State on 17 January announced the designation of Yemen's Houthis as a 'Specially Designated Global Terrorist group' amid an escalation of their attacks on shipping lanes in the Red Sea, the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and the Gulf of Aden since November 2023.
