South Korean oil refiner S-Oil on Friday held an annual New Year’s trekking event with some 120 company staff in Gyeonggi Province and fundraised 30 million won ($22,488) for a social welfare group.
S-Oil President and Head of Operations Park Bong-soo, President and Head of Corporate Strategy & Services Ryu Yul, President and Head of Marketing & Sales Ahn Jong-bum, and new employees joined this year's trekking event at the Haengjusanseong Fortress History Nurigil Trail in Goyang.
Since 2009, S-Oil executives and employees have gathered at the beginning of the year to start the New Year with trekking or hiking.
This year, the oil refiner also introduced a new donation challenge at the event, which converts the number of steps walked by participants into donations for a social cause or charity.
Strolling along the 3.7-kilometer trail, the participants together achieved their goal of one million steps, the oil refiner said. These steps are equivalent to a donation of 30 million won, which will be delivered to social welfare organizations based in Mapo-gu, where the oil refiner’s headquarters is also located.
During the event, S-Oil employees promised united efforts to ensure the successful completion of the Shaheen Project, a $7 billion mega-construction project of a large-scale petrochemical plant in the southeastern industrial city of Ulsan, by 2026.
The oil refiner also reminded participants of this year’s main goals, including strengthening the safety management system and culture, as well as responding to climate change and fostering the energy transition, it added.
